The Strengthened Quality Standards are a significant step forward for the Australian aged care sector.  Coming into effect on November 1st this year, they describe what good care looks like and how registered aged care providers deliver safe, high-quality care that meets the needs, goals and preferences of  individual older people in their care.

Person-centredness is central to the new Aged Care Act, Statement of Rights and the Strengthened Standards. The number of standards reduce from eight to seven from November 1st, with Standard one The Individual, foundational to all the other standards.  All standards encapsulate person-centred principles including the new standard Food and Nutrition.  They are more detailed and measurable compared to the current standards and reflect community expectation for high quality aged care.

Kineo aged care products support the learning needs of leaders, managers, supervisors and other aged care workers responsible for the delivery of care and services to older people, personal care workers and support workers in residential aged care and home care.  Course contextualisation in the strengthened standards courses means learners can choose their work context and view content specific to that workplace.  By making the look and feel of the course content applicable to the learner’s workplace experience they are more in tune with their learning. Pre-assessment technology tailors training to the individual learner’s needs by validating existing knowledge and streamlining learning to focus only on gaps.

Realistic scenarios and interactive activities are used throughout the strengthened standards courses to allow learners to practice in a safe, low stakes environment before applying what they have learnt in the workplace.  Learners can see how the standards play out in practical situations that accommodate variouslearning styles like text and visuals and interactive activities encourageparticipation by learners and enhance engagement with course content.  Scenarios allow for immediate feedback onlearner choices, enabling them to identify areas for improvement and adjusttheir approach to care and service delivery.

Let’s look at some of the scenarios that willhelp learners deepen their knowledge and understanding of the Strengthened AgedCare Quality Standards.

Learners will also hear how Westway, an agedcare facility, incorporated dementia friendly design features into theirdementia care unit (Strengthened standard 5- Clinical care) and how SunnyCorners, another aged care service, used feedback from older people, familiesand staff to improve their emergency management practice and procedures.  (Strengthened standard 2- The organisation).
