The purpose of this module is to help GPs build knowledge and confidence in managing paediatric ocular concerns. This module includes a refresher on eye anatomy, information on visual development milestones, information and tips how to conduct pupil and motility tests; how to check visual acuity for children of different ages and how to identify common refractive conditions; and how to examine, identify, manage and refer acute paediatric ocular presentations.

Target Audience

The Children’s Vision course is aimed at general practitioners (GPs).

Other primary and allied health professionals and Aboriginal health workers and practitioners are also welcome to complete this activity.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course learners will be able to:

  • outline the General Practice approach to the assessment and management of children with ocular concerns.
  • list key eye tests for different age groups and age-normal results when interpreting assessments.
  • describe features of history and examination that are useful in the vision assessment of children.
  • list clinical features and management of common paediatric ocular conditions.
  • describe referral pathways for paediatric ocular conditions, and list red flags for urgent referral.
