The purpose of this module is to help GPs build knowledge and confidence in early assessment and prompt intervention of ocular emergency presentations. This module includes background information on eye anatomy, eye care services and referral pathways; information and case studies on how to identify, manage and refer ocular emergencies, including presentations of acute vision loss, ocular trauma, acute red eyes and particular cases of paediatric emergencies.

Target Audience

The Ocular Emergencies course is aimed at general practitioners (GPs).

Other primary and allied health professionals and Aboriginal health workers and practitioners are also welcome to complete this activity.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course learners will be able to:

  • Describe features on history and examination that are useful in the assessment of ocular emergencies.
  • Identify red flag features on history and examination to assist identification of serious conditions not to be missed and those that require urgent referral.
  • Outline the initial first aid management of ocular emergencies in General Practice.
